What is Temperance?

Temperance is the fourteenth card of the tarot Major Arcana, usually shown as a winged figure pouring liquid between two cups. As a symbol it represents the archetype of balance, moderation, patience, and the blending of opposites.

Through the metaphor

Temperance pours between two cups in an unhurried, perfect measure, blending opposite elements into a gentle balance by feel rather than formula. The ISFP lives the same way—guided by an inner sense of what is right, present to the flow of the moment rather than a distant plan.

Its strength is a sincere, balanced artistry. Temperance does not announce its work; it simply finds the right measure, and the blend feels effortless to everyone who sees it. The ISFP expresses the same way—without performance, through a small, genuine touch that others feel rather than are told about, a quiet aesthetic that needs no explaining.

But the one who lives in the flow of the moment rarely maps the season ahead, and, being so finely tuned, may spill at a single harsh word. Temperance resists being told the exact measure and does not chart the months out. The ISFP can slip away the same way: so devoted to the present that long-range planning and standing up for its choices feel like a cage, and harsh feedback cuts deep.

Strengths & challenges in this light

Through this lens, the ISFP’s strengths come down to the sincere, balanced artistry and the genuine feel that lives fully in the present. The challenges grow from the same root: the devotion to the moment makes long-range planning and self-assertion hard, and criticism cuts deep. For Temperance to keep its measure, it has to plan for the season ahead and stand up for its choices out loud.
