What is The Flatwoods Monster?

The Flatwoods Monster is a tall figure with a spade-shaped head, reported one evening in 1952 near Flatwoods, West Virginia, in the United States. It was described as odd and startling to see—though it seemed only to be passing through.

Through the metaphor

The Flatwoods Monster is remembered as a strange, otherworldly shape that startled people at first sight—though the stories suggest it was only passing quietly through, not looking for any trouble. The INFP often feels the same: arriving in the world looking a little out of step with it, easy to misjudge from the outside, and carrying a soft, sincere inner life that a quick glance never sees.

Their strength is a deep, private sincerity that stays true to what they feel, no matter how it looks from outside. Where others shape themselves to fit the room, the Flatwoods Monster simply is what it is. The INFP works this way too—gentle and imaginative, loyal to an inner sense of what matters, quietly refusing to trade a real value away just because it would be easier, and able to feel the world with a tenderness others have learned to dull.

But someone so easily misread can start to expect the misreading and hang back. Sure that the outside world will only get them wrong, the INFP may keep the gentlest part of themselves out of sight—so braced for being misjudged that they stay at the edge of the clearing, and never give people the chance to see who is actually there.

Strengths & challenges in this light

Through this lens, the INFP's strengths come down to the deep, private sincerity that stays true to what they feel and the tenderness they keep for the world. The challenges grow from the same root: expecting to be misread and hanging back, staying at the edge of the clearing so no one ever sees who is really there. For the Flatwoods Monster to be met, it has to step forward sometimes—to let one person see the gentle world it carries, misreading and all.
