What is The Skyfish?

The Skyfish, or 'rod,' is a thin shape sometimes said to appear in camera footage, too quick for the eye to follow. It is often explained as a blurred insect or another camera effect, and the debate is part of its charm.

Through the metaphor

The Skyfish is said to slip through the world faster than the eye can follow, showing up only in the frame of a camera, in a space the ordinary glance skips right over. The INTP thinks the same way: darting off at an angle no one else checked, catching the odd detail a quick, busy look misses, and living happily in the gap between the things everyone agrees are there.

Their strength is an original, questioning mind that finds what a hurried look leaves out. Where others accept the picture as it first appears, the Skyfish shows there was a whole layer moving too fast to see. The INTP works this way too—analytical and inventive, more interested in understanding exactly how a thing works than in reaching a quick verdict, delighted by the connection nobody else was looking for.

But a shape that only ever flickers past can be hard to pin down when a decision is due. Fascinated by the next angle to check, the INTP may keep zipping around the question long after they understand it—so drawn to the space between the obvious answers that they slip past the plain moment of landing on one and saying, out loud, that it is enough.

Strengths & challenges in this light

Through this lens, the INTP's strengths come down to the original, questioning mind that finds what a hurried look leaves out and the delight in the space between the obvious answers. The challenges grow from the same root: flickering past the question long after they understand it, slipping past the plain moment of landing on one answer. For the Skyfish to help anyone, it has to hold still somewhere—to slow down long enough to say, out loud, 'this is the answer.'
