What is Harpsichord?

A Baroque-era keyboard instrument whose strings are plucked by small quills when the keys are pressed, giving a bright, crisp tone. In Baroque ensembles it typically played the continuo, filling in the underlying harmony.

Through the metaphor

A harpsichord wears its mechanism in the open: behind the keys, a quill plucks the string, and the very logic of how the sound is made stays visible. The INTP reaches the same way for the mechanism underneath—never satisfied that a note simply sounds, but driven to understand why it sounds at all.

The player weaves a single subject through voice after voice, swapping the lines until the counterpoint holds without a seam. The INTP likewise takes an idea apart to see what survives, prizing consistency over a convenient answer that merely passes.

But a harpsichord can keep refining the inner workings while the entrance waits. The same depth that uncovers the true mechanism delays the decision to begin—the moment the music asked for long gone, only a perfected interpretation left in hand.
