What is The Cactus?

Cacti (family Cactaceae) are succulents native almost entirely to the Americas, mostly in arid regions. They store water in thick stems; in most species, the leaves are reduced to spines, and many open their pores at night to lose less water in the desert heat.

Through the metaphor

A cactus needs no one; it stores its own water, holds its ground in hard, dry country, and spends nothing until it must. Then, when a rare rain comes, it answers with a sudden, exact bloom and just as quickly returns to quiet. The ISTP lives the same way—self-contained and practical, staying cool and detached until the moment is right, then acting with economical precision.

Its strength is self-reliant, precise economy. Where softer plants demand constant tending, the cactus quietly works out how to survive on almost nothing and needs no audience to do it. The ISTP is the same—independent and hands-on, figuring out exactly how a thing works without fuss and acting only where it counts.

But a plant built to endure and defend can stay closed too long, spines out, letting no one near even when nearness would help.
