What is Kendo?

Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art of swordsmanship, practiced with a bamboo sword (shinai) and protective armor, placing great value on etiquette and repeated basics.

Through the metaphor

Kendo begins with a bow and ends with a bow. The same practice swings and footwork are repeated thousands of times until the basics are carved into the body, and a solid foundation is prized over a flashy point. The ISTJ builds the same way: keeping procedures and promises, and making something dependable through patient repetition.

Its strength is the unshakable stability and trust that repetition builds. Where others hunt for shortcuts, it lays down the basics without skipping a step. The ISTJ works this way too—responsible, seeing to the end whatever it has been entrusted with.

But faithfulness to the form can harden against new ways and exceptions. Holding to how things "should" be done, the ISTJ may find its timing no longer matches a situation that has changed. The very discipline that makes it dependable can make it slow to bend when the moment asks for something different.

Strengths & challenges in this light

Through this lens, the ISTJ's strengths come down to the stability that repetition builds and the responsibility that sees a task through to the end. The challenges grow from the same root: holding to the form so faithfully that new ways and exceptions feel wrong, and missing when the situation has shifted. For kendo to stay alive, it has to tell apart the form worth keeping from the one worth changing.
