Through the metaphor
The dolphin uses echolocation: it sends sound below the surface and reads what cannot be seen from above. The INFJ senses things the same way—picking up the feeling someone has not yet put into words, the current running beneath the surface.
The dolphin swims with its pod, nudging a weakened member up to the surface to breathe. Its empathy becomes action aimed at a purpose—protecting the pod. The INFJ likewise pairs deep care with a quiet, long-range vision.
But the dolphin that reads everyone's signals is the one least likely to send its own distress call. It carries the pod's weight in silence, swimming on until it is spent. The INFJ, too, tends to absorb others and keep its own voice tucked away.
Strengths & challenges in this light
Through this lens, the INFJ's strengths come down to the insight that reads feelings below the surface and the steady sense of purpose. The challenges grow from the same root: always tuned to others' signals, it forgets to send its own, which leads to bottling things up and burning out. For the dolphin to keep swimming, it needs to click its own need toward the surface before its strength runs out.
