What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, using throws and joint techniques to blend with and redirect an opponent's force rather than clashing with it.

Through the metaphor

Aikido places less emphasis on defeating an opponent than on dissolving the clash—yielding when pushed, entering when pulled, and turning conflict toward harmony. It seeks a resolution where neither side is broken. The INFJ moves the same way: avoiding head-on collision while quietly steering people and the moment toward something better.

Its strength is a harmony that answers force without force. Where others compete to win, Aikido looks for a way to end the conflict itself. The INFJ works this way too—perceptive, reading the need beneath a dispute and quietly building a bridge across it.

But a wish to keep the peace can turn into always receiving. Swallowing its own needs and complaints to protect the harmony, the INFJ may stay forever on the yielding side—and, redirecting everyone else, lose track of where it wanted to go. Harmony held at the cost of the self slowly wears the self away.

Strengths & challenges in this light

Through this lens, the INFJ's strengths come down to the harmony that answers force without force and the insight that reads the need beneath a conflict. The challenges grow from the same root: protecting the peace so faithfully that it swallows its own needs and stays forever on the receiving side. For Aikido to keep the balance, it has to name what it wants plainly—to lead as well as to yield.
